Chelsea’s new owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital have spent their first summer at Stamford Bridge with a quick overhaul in every department.

The ambitious American bosses have spent over £176.5million on new signings this summer, mainly to three first-team players: Marc Cucurella (£63m), Raheem Sterling (£47.5m) and Kalidou Koulibaly (£34m). million).

Chelsea are also looking to bring in Everton forward Anthony Gordon, but their bid of around £40m to £45m has been rejected.

Talks between the two clubs have been going on for a few days, but the London club has now made their interest official. However, it is clear that Everton are not interested in selling the player and that a new contract is on the table for Gordon.

An improved Chelsea offer, however, could well put Everton’s determination to the test, as Frank Lampard must add options to his squad before the transfer window closes and a potential deal would raise finances to make that happen.

Chelsea were linked with a transfer to Gordon last week, but it was clear Everton had not yet received a formal offer at the time.

Gordon has started both of Everton’s Premier League games so far this season, playing as a false number 9 in the absence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin as the striker recovers from a knee injury.

Gordon has made 51 Premier League appearances for Everton to date, scoring four times.

It was his free kick that led to Jarrad Branthwaite’s equalizing goal against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last December.

Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher:

“It’s a lot of money [£40m] for a young player just coming on the scene, but I don’t see how Everton could accept that. The position they are in now, with no attacking players.

“He is the only great hope for the club. The supporters are not deaf at Everton. They have lost their first two games and they know they are going to have a difficult season. They need attacking players to come in, so there is no way they can let him go.

“Especially because he’s a local boy, he’s the one that fans hang their hats on. I think it should be much higher if Everton are going to penalize that.”

Karen Carney of Sky Sports:

“There are rumors that Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech are going, so he would be more of a like-for-like replacement for one of them. He’s young, he’s an English talent and that’s the kind of recruitment they went for. “

“They want some young and experienced players. When it comes to getting a recognized striker, he is not the type of player or the answer that has been talked about.”
