EastEnders to air tonight on BBC Two after Queen’s death

EastEnders must return to screens on BBC Two tonight (September 9) at 7 p.m..

The last episode of the soap was postponed yesterday (September 8) after news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The entire BBC One schedule will remain devoted to special programming and news specials throughout Friday (September 9).

As part of the coverage of the Queen’s death, BBC radio stations came together to share programmes. BBC Three and BBC Four’s schedules were also suspended.

There will also be further changes to BBC programming this weekend as it has been announced that the rest of the BBC Proms, including the Last Night of the Proms concert, have been cancelled.

Meanwhile, ITV has also announced schedule changes for Friday, replacing Lorraine, This morning, casual women and all its daily programming with a news special.

Schedules for all broadcasters are subject to change due to the evolving news situation, with the new King Charles III expected to deliver his first televised address to the country as head of state later in the day. The government is also expected to confirm a period of national mourning.

A joint statement by BBC President Richard Sharp and Director General Tim Davie said: “On behalf of everyone at the BBC, we offer our deepest condolences to the Royal Family on the passing of Her Majesty The Queen.

“Her Majesty was the absolute epitome of public service. She was a unifying figure across generations, communities and borders, representing the very best of our nation.

“We are grateful to the BBC for having seen, captured and shared so many of the special moments in her long life and reign. She will always be remembered with the greatest affection and admiration.”

The Queen’s eldest son, King Charles III, also published a tribute to the late monarch, who reigned for a total of 70 years and 214 days.

“The death of my beloved mother, Her Majesty the Queen, is a moment of greatest sorrow for me and all members of my family,” the new monarch wrote.

“We deeply mourn the passing of a cherished Sovereign and much-beloved mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt across the nation, the wealthy and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.

“During this period of grief and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was held so widely.”

EastEnders usually airs Monday-Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show is also being streamed on BBC iPlayer.
