Genshin Impact 3.0 Sumeru’s release date, characters and everything we know

Genshin Impact’s 3.0 update is a big one. Titled The Morn a Thousand Roses Brings, patch 3.0 opens up Sumeru and introduces Genshin’s seventh and final element, Dendro. It’s not strictly new, as Dendro has been around since the beginning of Genshin (some Hilichhurl mages can use Dendro) – but this is the first time the Traveler (and by extension us) can use the element.

Publication date

Genshin Impact 3.0 will be released August 24th. Pre-installation is usually available and will likely go live the day before release, August 23. Pre-installation allows players to log in once maintenance for the new patch is complete.

Patch 3.0 will last for five weeks, instead of the usual six.

New element: Dendro

Dendro, according to a Sumeru preview teaser, has included three key terms: catalysis, wisdom, and life. Mihoyo has so far revealed three of Dendro’s reactions with other elements: Burning, Bloom and Catalyze.

  • Bloom (Dendro and Hydro) is inspired by the real phenomenon of blooming flowers and is a combination of Hydro’s healing quality and Dendro’s ability to catalyze. Bloom will spawn Dendro cores, which will eventually explode with AoE Dendro damage.
    • Burgeon: If the Dendro cores produced by Bloom reactions get into Pyro or Electro, the Burgeon reaction is activated. This can increase explosive AoE Dendro damage or trigger hyper bloom–a response that turns Dendro cores into expansive shots that follow enemies.
  • Catalyzing (Dendro and Electro) doesn’t have the same strong, lifelike inspiration as Bloom. It is a combination of Electro’s qualities and Dendro’s keyword Wisdom. Catalyze also has a strong lore background, as it is apparently an integral part of Sumeru’s history. Catalyze applies the Quicken effect, causing the target’s next damage from the next Dendro or Electro damage (called Spread and to summarise).

As the trailer explains, there is a new system where certain features of the overworld and enemies change status depending on which element you apply to them, leading to different interactions between the player and the feature in question. If you defeat an enemy in a certain state in combat, you can even receive special rewards.

In the same teaser, players can see the Traveler hit a mushroom with Dendro, causing it to bloom. The Traveler can then use the mushroom as a trampoline – an action that shows Dendro’s potential as an interesting tool when exploring the overworld.

In keeping with tradition in the Genshin Impact community, leaks of the beta 3.0 have proliferated online – including a full list of rumored Dendro reactions. While most of the information in this leak is actually confirmed in trailers and press releases, as with anything rumored, take it with a grain of salt. We will have to wait until 3.0 is available to confirm Dendro’s features.

The Sumeru Institution

Sumeru is the land of wisdom, scholars and the Dendro Archon. Players probably know Sumeru as the place where Lisa, a character from Mondsadt we meet at the start of the game, went to school.

The organization known as Akademiya controls Sumeru’s affairs of state. Sumerians as a whole do not praise knowledge and dreams, something they are proud of – because they see it as proof of their rationality.

The environment of Sumeru is split into two biomes: the desert and the rainforest. Unlike Inazuma’s jagged cliffs and Liyue’s stone pillars, Sumeru’s mountainsides are softer, like those in the tropical and humid regions, according to the developers speaking in the second Sumeru preview teaser. The flora and fauna of the forest has a unique evolution of magic mushrooms called Funi. The strongest fungi have animalistic features, including a new chicken-slash-big-bird boss.

When players enter Sumeru, they will encounter a city built on a giant tree and a group of forest spirits, who of course have things they need the Traveler to help them with – the catalyst for the Traveler to explore many different regions in the Sumeru- Map. There’s even a mysterious giant robot sandwiched between mountains, as well as huge trees that glow.

Travelers will meet hermits, people descended from an ancient civilization in a desert. They are an independent force in Sumeru and can be considered mercenaries. In this vast desert, Sumeru also contains unique reverse tornadoes and secret areas – including relics and enemies of the fallen ancient civilization. There is also another giant robot in the desert. How the two robots are related is to be revealed in the game.

However, all of the above is threatened by something that “hollows out” them.

The Sumeru Storyline

A Sumeru trailer reveals that the Dendro Archon, the Greater Lord Rukkhadevata, is directly connected to Irminsul, the great tree whose roots form ley lines. However, she disappeared in a disaster a few hundred years ago. Sages eventually found a reborn version of the Archon – Lesser Lord Kusanali – and brought her back to Sumeru.

The 3.0 trailer also teases a festival called Sabzeruz and Archon’s Birthday Reborn, where Nilou – a character chosen to forge the path of art and dance in a land that values wisdom – will perform an important dance. There’s also a shadowy antagonistic force trying to bring back a god – said to be the former Dendro Archon – who promises “retaliation” for everyone else. The Fatui are also up to something in Sumeru, according to the Teyvat interlude teaser A Winter Night’s Lazzo. At the end of the teaser, a Doctor segment stands in front of a giant burning tree – probably Irminsul – and Collei, a Sumerian character, awakens from a dream.

Another problem that arises in Sumeru is something called the Withering. True to the name, withered zones seem devoid of life and the phenomenon is said to originate from the depths of the world. Rangers, as commented by the new Sumeru character Tighnari in the trailer, will likely be battling in the destruction zones for quite some time.

Playable Sumeru characters

Tighnari and Collei’s abilities have not been officially revealed. But reliable leakers, like Honey Hunter, have released what their kits would be. We won’t go into the details of their rumor kits here, but will provide a general overview.

Tighnari and Collei are on the first banner of 3.0, alongside a returning Zhongli banner. Dori is on the second set of 3.0 banners – Ganyu and Kokomi reruns – which will appear in the second half of the event. Collei is also available for free at the Graven Innocence event.

Tighnari (Bow, Five Star, Dendro)

  • Bio: A warm-hearted young researcher. He is a forest ranger and Collei’s teacher.
  • Skills: Dendro AoE damage dealer. Elemental burst allows Tighnari to launch six Dendro attacks that follow enemies.

Collei (Bow, Four Star, Dendro)

  • Bio: Trainee forester under Tighnari.
  • Skills: Archer with equipment similar to Amber’s, but Dendro instead of Pyro. She has a Dendro boomerang attack that can hit multiple enemies. She also has Amber’s Baron Bunny-esque toy called Cuilen-Anbar, which when exploding deals Dendro damage.

Dori (Claymore, Four Star, Electro)

  • Bio: A traveling merchant, who looks even smaller than Diona
  • Skills: Her kit is more focused on a support. Burst will connect to a character and provide them with HP recovery, energy regeneration and electro application.
