Director Justin Simien (“Dear White People”, “Bad Hair”, “Queer for Fear”) really showed his Disney credo at this year’s D23 when he stunned audiences with his longtime Disneyland cast member ID for the entirety of the show. audience. Simien told the crowd that when he was not working, he was always attracted to two attractions: Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion. “There was something about the ride that I felt was right in the script,” he said. “It was funny, but had a dark edge. I felt like I had to deal with it.” Simien assured the audience that his take on “The Haunted Mansion” would be true, and before the start of exclusive first-look footage, quipped: “I have to make sure all the little Easter eggs are there, because I’m a nerd.”
The footage begins with a car moving down a ghostly lane with a sign that says “Do not enter” on the side. A narrator begins to speak and the voice is none other than the national treasure, Danny DeVito. Suddenly things start to look a little strange… there are paranormal attacks! Explosions! Creepy images from the inside! “There are no records, just stories,” he says.
A character played by Rosario Dawson discovers blueprints of the creepy old house and notices that there should be a room at the end of the hallway, but there is no door. Owen Wilson, donning a bowler hat and jacket, claims he can open it by pulling the light torch on the wall before it breaks off. LaKeith Stanfield’s character tries too, looking through the eyes of a portrait on the wall, pulling it, which opens up to an eerie cave with stairs.
The trio grab flashlights and head down the stairs, noticing a round table with chairs and a chandelier with cobwebs above it. Stanfield tries to open a valve on a barrel, releasing liquid that overwhelms a flame and spreads light throughout the room. “This room hasn’t been touched in ages…” BECAUSE IT’S A SEANCE ROOM! Unfortunately, Owen Wilson seems to have forgotten that it is a lucky crucifix, and we finally see the ghost of Danny DeVito.
A ghost appears in the mirror, strange things happen all over the house, someone is thrown back with a splash of water and then… THE HITCHHIKING GHOSTS APPEAR! Our trio tries to figure out exactly what’s happening in this haunted house as they meet all the sneaky residents, including Jared Leto as the Hat Box Ghost.
The footage also confirms that prankster Hasan Minhaj is part of the cast, along with Winona Ryder and Dan Levy. But the real surprise came after the images. Riding a moving car on stage, the queen of screams herself, Jamie Lee Curtis arrives. “There’s one person we had to have, the queen of the scary movies,” Simien said. Anderton reported back that the footage looked like Disney’s attempt at “The Haunting,” a funny movie but also with some serious ghostly energy.
