Manchester United are interested in signing defending midfielder Moises Caicedo from Brighton.
The 20-year-old Ecuador international impressed in Brighton’s 2-1 opening weekend win at Old Trafford when Graham Potter’s side inflicted a defeat on new United boss Erik ten Hag in his first game in charge.
Caicedo only made his Premier League debut for Brighton at Arsenal in April but has become a regular fixture in Potter’s first team after starting his last 10 league games and playing 12 games in all competitions for the club.
United have long been admirers of Caicedo – they were looking for him when he came to Brighton from Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle in February 2021.
Brighton has no intention of selling the player. The club’s transfer policy is that they only sell for the right price at the right time
Caicedo, whose contract with Brighton runs until the summer of 2025, also scored his first Premier League goal against United in a stunning 4-0 win at Amex Stadium in May.
United will discuss internally whether or not to formalize their interest with an official offer.
After his Seagulls debut in the League Cup win at Cardiff in August 2021, Caicedo spent the first half of last season on loan at Belgium’s Beerschot before being recalled in January.
Caicedo is also likely to be a key player for Ecuador at the World Cup in Qatar, having won 23 caps and scoring two goals for his country.
Last October, he became the first player born in the 21st century to score in the CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifier, with a goal in Ecuador’s 4-2 win over Uruguay.
Brighton have already sold two key players to Premier League clubs this summer following the departure of Marc Cucurella to Chelsea on a £60 million deal and midfielder Yves Bissouma to Tottenham for £35 million.
Interest Caicedo comes amid waning optimism about deal with De Jong
Manchester United’s interest in Caicedo comes after waning optimism in signing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
United have not given up hopes of signing De Jong as they feel Barca are looking to strike a deal and have a broad deal worth £72million.
United also believe the Dutch international wants to come, but they know the potential move has taken much longer than they wanted or expected.
Sky Sports News has been told that “the door is not closed” on a deal to sign De Jong – but “the confidence is not great” a transfer can take place.
United have been looking at other options all summer, given the problematic nature of the De Jong deal. Alternative options may need to be activated quickly as there are only 16 days left in the window.
Meanwhile, the talks continue with Adrien Rabiot’s representatives on personal terms on the French midfielder’s proposed move from Juventus to United.
An agreement is close after a £15m deal has been negotiated in principle, with all parties willing to finalize the transfer.
United interested in signing a striker this summer
United also remains in the market for striker, with PSV Eindhoven’s Cody Gakpo an interesting player.
But United respect PSV’s involvement in the Champions League qualifiers and are likely to chase the 23-year-old into the last week of the window.
Stuttgart’s Sasa Kalajdzic is a player United are also looking at, with the Austrian possibly being reasonably priced as he has entered the final year of his contract and is looking to come to United.
United have been given the chance to sign Atlético Madrid’s contract Allvaro Morata with the former Chelsea striker of importance to Ten Hag.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is another striker who came forward for United during talks with Barcelona, but as it stands their interest has not continued as Chelsea insist on signing him.
Ronaldo may receive Man Utd departure wish | Chelsea seniors, Atleti not convinced
Cristiano Ronaldo United could leave this month if Ten Hag decides that his departure would be better for the club in the future.
United’s position has not changed and Ronaldo is not for sale. He still has a one-year contract and United have the option to extend it for another 12 months.
Sky Sports News reported Monday that Atletico Madrid and Chelsea are still two possible destinations for Ronaldo if United change their stance and let him leave.
However, there are senior figures at both clubs who are not convinced they should sign Ronaldo.
