Ronnie broadcasts Frankie sexual assault aftermath

EastEnders aired some powerful scenes tonight featuring Frankie Lewis and sexual harassment.

On Wednesday’s episode, Frankie was followed home by an aggressive creep after a night out with Lola, Whitney and Dotty. Tonight, viewers saw the aftermath.

Frankie couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being followed. And she was right to be wary. The man, who had sexually assaulted Frankie on the dance floor earlier that night, had also gotten off at Walford station.

The man continued to harass her and pin her to a wall, but a passerby intervened, giving Frankie a chance to flee home.

“It could have been so much worse,” Frankie’s father Mick said after telling him and Shirley of her ordeal.

“I shouldn’t be saved,” Frankie replied.

“I know you shouldn’t. I get you,’ said Mick.

‘No. You don’t understand,” Frankie said. “I had the key in my hand the whole time. I walked the safe way. I even walked past this place in case he followed me. I didn’t argue with him. I didn’t lead him on. I said No. I I did everything I had to do to stay safe But I got really scared Because he thinks it’s okay.

“They don’t see me as a person. They see me as a… thing.’

Mick’s reaction to going to the police didn’t go down well with Frankie.

“If you want this to stop, get up. Do something about it!” Mick insisted, prompting Frankie to give another strong speech.

“Do you think the police are going to take me seriously?” She asked her father. “Do you know how hard it is to make someone listen, even if it’s rape, Dad?

“Want to know why the police aren’t doing anything about it?! Because it happens to millions of us! Women and girls. The constant low-level sexual harassment, every day! And it’s much easier to just fire us than to put it under eyes to see, because that’s half the population!

“So no. I don’t want to have to fight it! I don’t want to ‘do something about it!’ Because I’m not the problem here, right?! AM I?!”

Will Frankie get justice?

EastEnders airs Monday-Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show is also being streamed on BBC iPlayer.
